This online exhibit was created to serve three purposes. The first is to provide a space to share the narrative of Porkopolis and reveal the history behind the symbolism of the flying pig. The second goal is to take the narrative outside Cincinnati’s borders to shed light on the rich rural history that is central to understanding this story of growth and connectivity. The final goal of this exhibit is to show the significance of the pig in the context of Cincinnati’s history. The pig and pork industry shaped economics, culture, and the land of the Cincinnati we know today.
